An attractive imitative Denarius of Maximinus of curious style

Maximinus I, 235-238. Denarius (Subaeratus, 20 mm, 3.33 g, 6 h), a contemporary plated imitation of an issue from Rome, after 236. MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG GERM Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Maximinus I to right, seen from behind. Rev. PAX AVGVSTI Pax standing front, head to left, holding olive branch in her right hand and inverted scepter in her left. Cf. BMC 144, Cohen 37 and RIC 19 (for prototype). A nicely toned example of curious style. Minor breaks in plating and with light deposits, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the Joseph Markowitz Collection (1897-1981), brought to Israel in 1949 and kept in the family ever since.
